Introduction :

Amlodipine 5mg is a calcium channel blocker and may be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive and antianginal agents for the treatment of: ? Hypertension ? Coronary Artery Disease ( Chronic Stable Angina o Vasospastic Angina (Prinzmetal?s or Variant Angina) o Angiographically Documented Coronary Artery Disease in patients without heart failure or an ejection fraction

Indication :

Amlodipine 5mg is a type of medicine known as a calcium channel blocker (CCB). It is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and a type of chest pain called angina. It can be used by itself or with other medicines to treat these conditions. High Blood Pressure (hypertension) High blood pressure comes from blood pushing too hard against your blood vessels. amlodipine 10mg relaxes your blood vessels, which lets your blood flow more easily and helps lower your blood pressure. Drugs that lower blood pressure lower your risk of having a stroke or heart attack. Angina Angina is a pain or discomfort that keeps coming back when part of your heart does not get enough blood. Angina feels like a pressing or squeezing pain, usually in your chest under the breastbone. Sometimes you can feel it in your shoulders, arms, neck, jaws, or back. amlodipine 10mg can relieve this pain.

Administration :

Amlodipine is usually taken once per day. Take the medicine at the same time each day, with or without food.

Storage :

Store the medicine at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep out of the reach of children.

Side Effects :

This drug may cause palpitations, peripheral edema, fatigue, headaches, abdominal pain, nausea, or flushing

Contraindications :

Avoid use of this drug during pregnancy and prescribe an alternative. Evidence has demonstrated fetal abnormalities or risks when used during pregnancy Evidence has demonstrated harmful infant effects when used during breastfeeding

Safety Advice / Warnings :

Patient should avoid activities requiring coordination until drug effects are realized, as drug may cause dizziness Instruct patient to take a missed dose as soon as possible, but if it has been more than 12 hours since the dose was missed, skip the dose. Check with your doctor right away if you or your child have pain or tenderness in the upper stomach, pale stools, dark urine, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, or yellow eyes or skin. These could be symptoms of a serious liver problem. After taking a dose of this medicine you may get a headache that lasts for a short time. This should become less noticeable after you have taken this medicine for a while. If this effect continues, or if the headaches are severe, check with your doctor. Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting may also occur if you exercise or if the weather is hot. Heavy sweating can cause loss of too much water and result in low blood pressure. Use extra care during exercise or hot weather.

Mechanism of Action :

Amlodipine is a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker that exerts its effect by blocking the transmembrane influx of calcium ions into cardiac and vascular smooth muscles. It also reduces peripheral vascular resistance and lowers blood pressure by acting directly on vascular smooth muscle. Its therapeutic effect on angina may be through a decrease in peripheral resistance (exertional angina) and inhibition of coronary spasm (vasospastic angina)
