CEFIXIME DT 200 MG
Introduction : Cefixime 200mg is a cephalosporin antibiotic. It is used to treat a large variety of infections including urinary tract, ear, and lung infections caused by bacteria. Cefixime kills the bacteria and stops their further growth. It is not effective against infections caused by viruses.
Cefixime 200mg can cause some side effects like weakness, headache, nausea, stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhoea. Seek medical attention if any of these side effects persist or worsen. Cefixime may trigger an episode of fits or seizures, so consult your doctor if you have noticed such conditions after taking this medicine. It may cause dizziness, confusion, or fits, so it is advised that you do not drive a vehicle or operate machinery after taking this medicine. Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to it.
Cefixime 200mg is available on prescription as a capsule, tablet, chewable, powder for suspension and syrup. Due to its once-daily dosing regime, it has become a frequent choice for all doctors and patients. It is not safe for use in children less than 6 months of age.
Indication : Cefixime 200mg is a cephalosporin antibacterial drug indicated for ? Uncomplicated Urinary Tract Infections (1.1) ? Otitis Media (1.2) ? Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis (1.3) ? Acute Exacerbations of Chronic Bronchitis (1.4) ? Uncomplicated Gonorrhea (cervical/urethral) (1.5)
Administration : Cefixime can be taken with or without food around the same time every day. Once the antibiotic treatment is started, be sure to finish the entire course of treatment to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance. Do not take Cefixime when it is not required can make it less effective for future infections.
Storage : Store at a controlled room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C
Side Effects : Most common adverse reactions are gastrointestinal such as diarrhea (16%),
nausea (7%), loose stools (6%), abdominal pain (3%), dyspepsia (3%), and
vomiting. (6)
Contraindications : Contraindicated in patients with known allergy to cefixime or other
cephalosporins
Safety Advice / Warnings : Pregnancy: Cefixime should be used during pregnancy only if clearly
needed. (8.1)
? Nursing Mothers: Consideration should be given to discontinuing
nursing temporarily during treatment with cefixime. (8.3)
? Children: Efficacy and safety in infants aged less than six months
have not been established. (8.4)
? Geriatric Use: Clinical studies did not include sufficient numbers of
subjects aged 65 and older to determine whether they respond
differently than younger subjects. Other reported clinical experience
has not identified differences in responses between the elderly and
younger patients. (8.5)
? Renal Impairment: Cefixime may be administered in the presence of
impaired renal function. Dose adjustment is required in patients whose
creatinine clearance is less than 60 mL/min.
