Propranolol 40 Mg

Propranolol 40mg tablet is a beta blocker used to treat high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats, shaking (tremors), and other conditions. It is used after a heart attack to improve the chance of survival. It is also used to prevent migraine headaches and chest pain (angina). Lowering high blood pressure helps prevent strokes, heart attacks, and kidney problems. Preventing chest pain can help improve your ability to exercise. This drug works by blocking the action of certain natural chemicals in your body (such as epinephrine) that affect the heart and blood vessels. This effect reduces heart rate, blood pressure, and strain on the heart.

Swallow the long-acting oral tablets whole. Do not break, chew, crush, or open them. The dose of this medicine will be different for different patients. Follow your doctor's orders or the directions on the label. Remember that this medicine will not cure your high blood pressure, but it does help control it. You must continue to take it as directed if you expect to lower your blood pressure and keep it down. You may have to take high blood pressure medicine for the rest of your life. If high blood pressure is not treated, it can cause serious problems such as heart failure, blood vessel disease, stroke, or kidney disease.

Propranolol will add to the effects of alcohol and other central nervous system (CNS) depressants. CNS depressants are medicines that slow down the nervous system and may cause drowsiness. This medicine may cause erectile dysfunction in some males. Check with your doctor right away if you have decreased interest in sexual intercourse, inability to have or keep an erection, or loss in sexual ability, drive, or performance. If you have questions about this, talk to your doctor. Warn patient to avoid activities requiring mental alertness or coordination until drug effects are realized, as drug may cause excessive somnolence and impaired cognition Advise diabetic patient to carefully monitor blood glucose as drug may mask symptoms of hypoglycemia Counsel patient against sudden discontinuation of drug, as this may precipitate heart realted problems.
