DUTASTERIDE 0.5 MG

Introduction :

Dutasteride 0.5mg tablet is used alone or in combination with tamsulosin to treat men who have symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland, which is also known as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Benign enlargement of the prostate is a problem that can occur in men as they get older. The prostate gland is located below the bladder. As the prostate gland enlarges, certain muscles in the gland may become tight and get in the way of the tube that drains urine from the bladder. This can cause problems with urinating, such as a need to urinate often, a weak stream when urinating, or a feeling of not being able to empty the bladder completely. Dutasteride 0.5mg tablet blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow. As a result, the size of the prostate is decreased. The effect of dutasteride lasts only as long as the medicine is taken. If it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again. This medicine is available only with your doctors prescription.

Indication :

Dutasteride 0.5mg tablet is used in men to treat the symptoms of an enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia-BPH). It works by reducing the size of the enlarged prostate. This helps to relieve symptoms of BPH such as difficulty in beginning the flow of urine, weak stream, and the need to urinate often or urgently (including during the middle of the night). It may also reduce the need for surgery to treat BPH. Dutasteride 0.5mg tablet is not approved for prevention of prostate cancer. It may slightly increase the risk of developing a very serious form of prostate cancer.

Mechanism of Action :

Systemic: Dutasteride inhibits the conversion of testosterone to 5?-dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the androgen primarily responsible for the initial development and subsequent enlargement of the prostate gland. Testosterone is converted to DHT by the enzyme 5?-reductase, which exists as 2 isoforms, type 1 and type 2. Type 2 isoenzyme is primarily active in the reproductive tissue while type 1 isoenzyme is responsible for testosterone conversion in the skin and liver.
