OLANZAPINE 5 MG
Introduction : Olanzapine 5mg tablet is used to treat schizophrenia. It may also be used alone or with other medicines (eg, lithium or valproate) to treat mania or mixed episodes that is part of bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness). Olanzapine 5mg tablet may also be used together with fluoxetine to treat depression that is a part of bipolar disorder, and depression in patients who received other antidepressants that did not work well. This medicine should not be used to treat behavioral problems in older adult patients who have dementia or Alzheimers disease.
This medicine is available only with your doctors prescription.
Indication : Olanzapine 5mg tablet helps to manage symptoms of mental health conditions such as:
seeing, hearing, feeling or believing things that others do not, feeling unusually suspicious or having muddled thoughts (schizophrenia)
feeling agitated or hyperactive, very excited, elated, or impulsive (mania symptoms of bipolar disorder)
If you have bipolar disorder, olanzapine can also stop your mania symptoms coming back.
Olanzapine 5mg tablet does not cure your condition, but it can help with your symptoms.
Olanzapine comes as tablets, including tablets that dissolve in your mouth (orodispersible), and an injection.
Olanzapine is only available with a prescription.
Administration : You may take this medicine with or without food.
Take this medicine exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not take more of it, do not take it more often, and do not take it for a longer time than your doctor ordered.
This medicine should come with a Medication Guide. Read and follow the instructions carefully. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions.
Storage : Protect from moisture or light and store below 30 degrees Celsius (C))
Side Effects : Bloating or swelling ; blurred vision; change in walking and balance; clumsiness or unsteadiness; difficulty with speaking; difficulty with swallowing; loss of balance control; rapid weight gain; restlessness; unusual weight gain or loss
Contraindications : Avoid use of this drug during pregnancy and prescribe an alternative. Evidence has demonstrated fetal abnormalities or risks when used during pregnancy.
Evidence and/or expert consensus has demonstrated harmful infant effects when used during breastfeeding.
Safety Advice / Warnings : Olanzapine may cause some people to be agitated, irritable, or display other abnormal behaviors. It may also cause some people to have suicidal thoughts and tendencies or to become more depressed. If you or your caregiver notice any of these unwanted effects, tell your doctor right away.
This medicine may increase the amount of sugar in your blood. Check with your doctor right away if you have increased thirst or increased urination.
This medicine may increase your cholesterol and fats in the blood. If this condition occurs, your doctor may give you or your child some medicines that can lower the amount of cholesterol and fats in the blood.
This medicine may increase your weight. Your doctor may need to check your or your childs weight on a regular basis while you are using this medicine.
his medicine can temporarily lower the number of white blood cells in your blood, increasing the chance of getting an infection. If you can, avoid people with infections.
Olanzapine may cause drowsiness, trouble with thinking, trouble with controlling body movements, or trouble with your vision, which may lead to falls, fractures or other
injuries. Make sure you know how you react to this medicine before you drive, use machines, or do other jobs that require you to be alert, well-coordinated, or able to think or see well.
This medicine may add to the effects of alcohol which can be harmful for your body

Mechanism of Action : Olanzapine is an atypical antipsychotic with an exact mechanism of action that is unknown. In schizophrenia, efficacy may be mediated through dopamine and serotonin type 2 (5HT2) antagonism. Olanzapine binds with high affinity to serotonin 5HT2A/2C, 5HT6, dopamine D1-4, histamine H1, and adrenergic alpha 1 receptors; moderate affinity for serotonin 5HT3 and muscarinic M1-5; low affinity to GABAA, BZD, and beta-adrenergic receptors
