B-MUCE cream is widely used for the treatment of localized bacterial infections of the skin. Mupirocin may be prescribed for: Impetigo (a contagious bacterial skin infection) Minor skin infections caused by bacteria Infected cuts, wounds, or abrasions Folliculitis (infection of hair follicles) Secondary bacterial skin infections

Clean and dry the affected area before application. Apply a small amount of ointment to the affected area as directed by the physician. Usually applied 2–3 times daily. The treated area may be covered with a sterile dressing if advised by a doctor

Store below 25–30°C. Protect from heat and moisture. Keep the tube tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children.

Side effects may include burning, stinging, pain, dry skin, swelling, or tenderness

Use with caution in: Large open wounds Prolonged use on large areas of skin

Advise patient to report to doctor for irritation, severe itching, or rash Instruct patient to avoid contact with eyes and to rinse thoroughly with water if accidental contact occurs

The mechanism of action is not completely understood. Mupirocin is bacteriostatic at low concentrations and bactericidal at high concentrations. This agent reversibly and specifically binds to bacterial isoleucyl transfer RNA synthetase, thereby inhibiting bacterial protein and RNA synthesis. DNA synthesis and cell wall formation are affected to a lesser extent.
