Lorazepam enhances the activity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) by binding to the benzodiazepine site of the GABA-A receptor in the brain. This increases chloride ion influx into neurons, reducing neuronal excitability and producing anxiolytic, sedative, anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant effects.
