ATORVASTATIN 20 MG
Introduction : Atorvastatin 20mg is used as an adjunct to diet to reduce elevated cholesterol levels in adult patients with
primary hypercholesterolemia
Atorvastatin 20mg belongs to the group of medicines called HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, or statins. It works by blocking an enzyme that is needed by the body to make cholesterol, and this reduces the amount of cholesterol in the blood.
This medicine is available only with your doctors prescription.
Indication : Atorvastatin 20mg is indidacted to reduce the risk of:
Myocardial infarction (MI), stroke, revascularization procedures, and angina in adults with multiple risk factors for coronary heart disease (CHD) but without clinically evident CHD.
Administration : Oral tablets may be taken at any time of the day with or without food
Missed dose: Take as soon as possible. If dose was missed by more than 12 hours, do not take the missed dose and resume with the next scheduled dose
Storage : Store at a controlled room temperature between 20 and 25 degrees C
Mechanism of Action : Atorvastatin calcium selectively and competitively inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, a rate-limiting enzyme that converts 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A to mevalonate, a sterol and cholesterol precursor, Triglycerides and cholesterol are incorporated into very low density lipoproteins (VLDL) in the liver and are released into plasma for distribution to peripheral tissues. Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) are formed from VLDL and are catabolized primarily through the receptor with high affinity for LDL receptor. Atorvastatin reduces plasma cholesterol and lipoprotein concentrations by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase and subsequent hepatic cholesterol biosynthesis in the liver and increasing the number of liver receptors for LDL on the cell surface, leading to increased absorption and catabolism of LDL. Atorvastatin reduces LDL production and produces a profound and sustained increase in LDL receptor activity along with a beneficial change in the quality of circulating LDL
