Introduction :

Lacosamide 10mg tablet is used to treat partial-onset seizures. It is also used with other medicines to treat primary generalized tonic-clonic seizures. It acts on the central nervous system (CNS) to reduce the number and severity of seizures. However, this medicine cannot cure epilepsy and will only work to control seizures for as long as you continue to take it. This medicine is available only with your doctors prescription.

Indication :

Lacosamide 10mg tablets is used in people with epilepsy to treat and prevent seizures, sometimes called convulsions. Seizures are caused by electrical activity in the brain that is not normal. It is believed that lacosamide blocks this abnormal electrical activity and slows down the spread of seizures.

Administration :

May be given with or without food, Tablets should be swallowed whole with liquid; do not divide If you miss a dose of this medicine, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not double doses.

Storage :

Store the medicine in a closed container at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and direct light. Keep from freezing. Keep out of the reach of children.

Side Effects :

Dizziness; false or unusual sense of well-being; shakiness and unsteady walk; sleepiness or unusual drowsiness; trembling or shaking of the hands or feet; unsteadiness, trembling, or other problems with muscle control or coordination

Safety Advice / Warnings :

Breastfeeding during treatment with this medicine may cause your baby to be more sleepy. Talk with your doctor if you have concerns to avoid activities requiring mental alertness or coordination until drug effects are realized, as drug may cause dizziness, double vision, abnormal coordination and balance, and somnolence Do not stop taking this medicine without first checking with your doctor. Stopping the medicine suddenly may cause your seizures to return or to occur more often. Your doctor may want you to gradually reduce the amount you are using before stopping it completely.

Mechanism of Action :

Lacosamide is a functionalized amino acid in which precise antiepileptic mechanism is unknown. It appears to offer dual mode of action by controlling neuronal hyperexcitability via selective sodium channel slow inactivation, and binding to collapsin response mediator protein-2 (CRMP-2) which is part of the signal transduction cascade of neurotropic factors.
