Introduction :

Montelukast 10mg tablet is used to treat and prevent asthma. It will decrease the symptoms and the number of acute asthma attacks. However, this medicine should not be used to relieve an asthma attack that has already started. This medicine is also used to prevent exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB) and treat symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever), including seasonal (short-term) or perennial (long-term) allergic rhinitis, such as sneezing, runny nose, itching, or wheezing. Montelukast 10mg tablet is used to prevent asthma attacks. It is not used to relieve an attack that has already started. For relief of an asthma attack that has already started, you should use another inhaled medicine This medicine is available only with your doctors prescription.

Indication :

Montelukast 10mg tablet is used to control and prevent symptoms caused by asthma (such as wheezing and shortness of breath). It is also used before exercise to prevent breathing problems during exercise (bronchospasm). Montelukast 10mg tablet can help decrease the number of times you need to use your quick relief inhaler.Montelukast is also used to relieve symptoms of hay fever and allergic rhinitis (such as sneezing, stuffy/runny/itchy nose). Montelukast 10mg tablet should be used for this condition only when you cannot take other allergy medications or they do not work well.

Administration :

To work properly, montelukast must be taken at the same time each day, even if your asthma seems better. You may take this medicine with or without food.

Storage :

store at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Side Effects :

Side effects may include upper respiratory infection, fever, headache, pharyngitis, cough, abdominal pain, diarrhea, otitis media, influenza, rhinorrhea, sinusitis, and otitis

Contraindications :

Avoid use of this drug during pregnancy and prescribe an alternative. Evidence has demonstrated fetal abnormalities or risks when used during pregnancy. Evidence and/or expert consensus has demonstrated harmful infant effects when used during breastfeeding.

Direct patient with asthma to take dose once daily in the evening Patients to continue with other asthma medications as prescribed unless instructed by a doctor Patients with known aspirin sensitivity to continue avoidance of aspirin or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents while taking drug

Mechanism of Action :

Montelukast sodium is a selective and active leukotriene receptor antagonist. It binds to cysteinyl leukotrienes (CysLT) type-1 receptors found in human airway (smooth muscle cells and macrophages), which prevents airway edema, smooth muscle contraction and other respiratory inflammation. The leukotrienes are also released from the nasal mucosa after allergen exposure where montelukast sodium may inhibit symptoms of allergic rhinitis
