Ornidazole is a nitroimidazole antimicrobial agent that enters susceptible anaerobic bacteria and protozoa, where its nitro group is reduced to reactive intermediates. These metabolites damage microbial DNA, inhibit nucleic acid synthesis, and ultimately cause cell death. Its activity is selective against anaerobic organisms and protozoal parasites.
