Tadalafil selectively inhibits the phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) enzyme, preventing the breakdown of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). During sexual stimulation, increased cGMP levels relax the smooth muscles of the penile blood vessels, resulting in enhanced blood flow to the corpus cavernosum and facilitating an erection. Its effects occur only in the presence of sexual stimulation.
